What commissioning an 800 MWh site actually involves

Twelve weeks, four thousand tests and one very long checklist.

Commissioning is where a design meets the real grid. On a site of this size it is not a single switch-on, but weeks of structured testing, block by block, until the whole system behaves as one.

From blocks to a power plant

Each enclosure is tested at the factory, then again on site once it is connected. Only after every block passes do we test them together, first at low power and then at full rating.

Most issues are found in the quiet weeks before energisation, not on the day itself.

Grid compliance testing comes last. The network operator needs to see the site respond to frequency and voltage events exactly as the connection agreement requires.

What the checklist covers

  • Protection settings and trip tests at every voltage level

  • Thermal performance under sustained charge and discharge

  • Control software, communications and cyber security

  • Fire detection and suppression, witnessed with local authorities

Done well, commissioning is uneventful. That is the goal: a site that starts trading on schedule and keeps doing so.
